About the Movie

During WW2, many Italian Canadian immigrants were sent to camps in order to combat the fascist threat.  Clouded by embarrassment, these stories have not been spoken of and have been barely passed on through family members.  In recent years, the discussion on early immigration has brought these events to light.  While women and children were spared, men were sent to internment camps located all over the country. For many families of Italian descent, these stories have become a symbol of their traumatic experience.

During those years, being Italian was not popular at all.   As men were interned, the families began to assimilate into Canadian society in order to distance themselves from their heritage.  The first thing to be abandoned was their language.  Children were encouraged by their mothers to speak English, leaving a large generation of Italian Canadians as non-Italian speaking.

Many of the interned Italian Canadians have passed on, but they have left their stories with family members.  Internment: The Untold Stories, gathers these stories and travels to the internment camps to revisit the events.  Through pictures, letters, testimonies, and local images, these hidden secrets are unveiled and finally put to rest.
